Functional Thinking: A Study with 10th-Grade Students

This study aims to understand the functional thinking of 10th-grade students while studying functions. Specifically, we intend answer following research questions: what are processes used by when functions? What difficulties do present learning In view nature this objective, adopted a qualitative and interpretative approach. order these questions, data were collected from written records produced solving proposed tasks, oral interactions during discussions questionnaire. The results show that implicit in resolution tasks students. expressed an understanding how variables related, presenting evidence their working on new concepts represented functions addressed tasks. Some interpreting different types representations associated with functions, retaining necessary information graphical representation would help them draw conclusions establish correspondences, explaining relationships, provided algebraic expressions.
